What's Ahead

Spring 2006 will see underwear coming out from under to be a major fashion statement. The bustier will be fancier with hand-embroidery or colorful blocks of bright pastels. Blouses will be open to the waist to expose bras of contrasting colors or novelty fabrics such as leather or stretch jersey. Camisole-style tops and seamed bra-tops emphasize the body.

Buying the Right Bra Size

It is estimated that 70% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. This can lead to serious damage such as pains in the neck and back and bad posture just because they are not getting the right support from their bra. Nine out of ten women say the pain goes away as soon as they have been fitted properly. When buying a bra, follow these simple guidelines:

Find one of your old, comfortable bras and put it on. Measure your rib cage along the band of the bra. If the number is 33 or less, add 5 inches to that number and that is your bra size. If the number is over 33 inches add 3 inches to get your bra size. Round odd numbers up to even.

Measure the bust by measuring around the shoulder blades, under the arms and around the fullest part of the breast. This will be your cup measurement.

Subtract the first number (bra size) from the last number (cup size). Use the chart below to determine what size bra you should be wearing. For example if your bra size was 36 and your cup measurement was 38 (remember, we rounded up to next even number), the difference is 2" so you would wear a 36B.

Use this chart:

AA = 1/2"
A = 1"
B = 2"
C = 3"
D = 4"
DD or E = 5"
F = 6"
G = 7"

Try these tips to for a perfect, comfortable bra fit:

  • Put your arms into the bra staps and bend forward so that your breasts fall naturally into the cup. Adjust each breast to fit comfortably. The cup should be large enough to accomodate the entire breast. If you have one breast that is larger than the other (which most of us do) buy the bra to fit the largest breast.
  • Fasten the bra using the center set of hooks.
  • Stand up straight and adjust the straps to fit comfortably.
  • If your breasts are bulging out at the top or sides your cup size is too small.
  • If your cup puckers or the straps fall off your shoulders your cup size is to small - you need to be able to fill the entire cup to prevent this from happening.
  • You should be able to run your finger under the band in front. It should be snug, but not tight. If it's tight, you need a larger band size, or a looser hook placement.
  • The lower edge of the band should anchor below the shoulder blades. The lower the back fits, the more support you get.
  • Wear smooth-seamed cups with knit shirts.
  • Wear a nude-colored bra with light tops, even white tops and wear a black bra with dark tops.
